CATEGORY INFORMATION

Features, applications and selection criteria

Cold room sandwich panel — Insulated panels for building chilled and freezer cold rooms, process rooms and refrigerated warehouses. Both faces are steel sheet pre-painted in white RAL 9010, with a polyurethane (PUR) or polyisocyanurate (PIR) core and tongue-and-groove joints that give continuous walls and ceilings, easy to clean and free of thermal bridges.

Which cold room panel do you need?

This category has two ranges, depending on the temperature the room will run at:

Both are made to EN 14509, with 0.5 mm S250GD steel sheet pre-painted white on both faces, a 40 kg/m³ core and a declared thermal conductivity of 0.0207 W/m·K. They are cut to the length you need, from 4 to 14 m (8 m maximum recommended).

Why choose cold room sandwich panel

  • Very high insulation in a slim panel: a 100 mm panel insulates more than a brick wall several times thicker.
  • Fast, clean installation: walls and ceiling go up in days, not weeks, and the room can be extended or dismantled.
  • Hygienic surfaces: white pre-painted steel is non-absorbent, cleans with water and detergent and is suitable for the food industry.
  • Tongue-and-groove joint: the panels lock together and the joint is airtight and vapour-tight.

Which thickness for each temperature

Thickness depends mainly on the room temperature, but also on the outside climate, the size of the room and how often the door is opened. As a guide:

Room use Inside temperature Guide thickness
Air-conditioned and process rooms +10 to +15 °C 40–60 mm
Fresh produce storage 0 to +5 °C 60–80 mm
Meat and fish storage −2 to +2 °C 80–100 mm
Freezing −18 to −25 °C 120–150 mm
Deep freezing and blast tunnels −30 to −40 °C 150–200 mm

Guide values. The final thickness is set by the project’s thermal calculation or by the refrigeration installer.

How a cold room is built with sandwich panel

  • Prepare a level floor and, in freezer rooms, an insulated floor protected against ground frost.
  • Fix a U-profile base track of the same thickness as the panel to the floor: it aligns the walls and protects the insulation edge.
  • Fit the wall panels, locking the tongue-and-groove joints, and fix them to each other and to the structure.
  • Fit the ceiling resting on the walls, or hung from a structure above for large spans.
  • Finish corners, joints and door openings with hygienic profiles and seal every joint with food-safe silicone.

In freezer rooms, a pressure relief valve and a continuous vapour barrier are essential: without them, ice and pressure differences end up damaging joints and doors.

Complete your cold room

To finish the installation you need the cold room panel flashings (U-profiles for 40–80 mm and 100–200 mm panels) and sandwich panel screws; if the room sits inside a building, you can combine it with façade sandwich panel for the outer envelope.

Frequently asked questions about cold room panel

What is the difference between the chilled and the freezer panel?

The thickness. The chilled panel goes from 30 to 100 mm and is for above-zero temperatures; the freezer panel goes up to 200 mm to keep −18 °C or lower at a reasonable running cost.

PUR or PIR?

Both insulate almost the same. PIR (polyisocyanurate) performs better in fire, so it is chosen when the project requires better reaction to fire.

Is it suitable for the food industry?

Yes. The faces are smooth white RAL 9010 pre-painted steel that is easy to clean. For full hygiene, joints are finished with hygienic profiles and sealed.

Can I build the cold room myself?

A small room can be built by an installer experienced with panels. The refrigeration side (unit, door, valve and electrical connection) must be done by a refrigeration installer.
